A recessed ironing board is a cabinet buried in the wall itself, so the board stores between the studs and only the door and trim stand proud of the finished surface. How recessing works

Recessing means the box goes in the hole, not on the wall. A carpenter cuts an opening in the drywall between two studs, fixes a 2×4 cross-support cleat at the base, drops the cabinet into the cavity, and screws through its sides into the framing. Four #10 x 1-1/2 in (38 mm) wood screws, one per corner, hold a non-swivel unit.

The trim or the door lip then covers the cut edge of the drywall, which is why a well-fitted recessed unit reads as a flat panel rather than as a fixture. From the room, the wall looks unbroken.

Recessed cabinets come with the board fixed square to the wall or on a pivot that turns it into the room. A swivel unit carries its load differently, moving the fixing to side brackets that take heavier screws, so the framing around the opening matters more and the floor in front has to stay clear through the full arc.

What the wall has to give up

The wall gives up a bay, and you have to prove that bay is free before anyone cuts. Three things live in stud bays: water pipes, electrical cable, and duct runs. Any one of them stops the job at that spot. Check what sits above and below the proposed opening, and open the wall in stages rather than cutting the full opening first.

Structure is the second question. Cutting a stud in a load-bearing wall changes how load reaches the floor, and that is not a decision to make from a product page. If a stud has to be cut or moved, bring in a licensed contractor or a structural engineer, and check local permit rules before work starts.

The bay also has to be tall enough. A 46 in (117 cm) unit needs an opening 59-7/8 in (152 cm) high, which often runs past the height of a light switch.

What recessing means for renovation and resale

The cheapest time to recess a cabinet is while the wall is open. Cutting into finished drywall adds patching, taping, sanding and repainting to the job, and in a papered or tiled wall that cost climbs sharply.
