Check the wall before you cut anything

Cut nothing until you have proved the bay is non-structural and empty. Partitions running parallel to the floor joists are commonly non-load-bearing, but a wall carrying a beam is not, and only a builder or engineer can settle it. Never notch a stud to fit an opening.

Then hunt for services. Kill the circuit at the panel, scan with a stud finder that has live-wire detection, and read the wall: outlets, switches, a kitchen behind, or a register above all hint at something in that cavity. Drill a probe hole inside the marked area and feel around with a bent wire. Exterior walls also carry insulation and an air barrier, so an interior partition is nearly always the better bay.

Height is the decision people rush. Step-by-step

Step 1 — Mark the opening

Transfer the cabinet’s published opening onto the wall with a level and pencil. Measure up from the finished floor to the bottom line first, using the height table supplied with the unit, then square the sides to the stud faces.

Step 2 — Cut the drywall

Score the lines with a utility knife, then cut with a drywall saw or an oscillating multi-tool set shallow, so no blade can reach a cable. Cut inside the lines and pare back to them. Vacuum the bay, then check the stud faces for nail plates and old staples.

Step 3 — Fit the cross-support cleat

Cut a 2×4 to fit tightly between the studs and screw it in level with the bottom of the opening. This cleat carries the cabinet’s weight and stops the base flexing under a loaded board. Skipping it is why cabinets rack later.

Step 4 — Dry-fit, then fix the cabinet

Slide the cabinet in empty first. Check that it sits flat on the cleat, that the flange lies tight to the drywall, and that it is plumb both ways, shimming where the drywall is proud. Then drive four #10 x 1-1/2 in (3.8 cm) wood screws, one per corner, into the studs and cleat. Swivel models instead take two #10 x 1-1/2 in screws at the top and two #14 x 2-1/2 in (6.4 cm) Phillips screws through the side brackets.

Step 5 — Test the board and mechanism

Lower the board, lock it, and press down along its length. It should stay level and stay put. Swing a swivel model through its full arc and confirm nothing fouls the casing or a light switch. Re-check the height against the user.

Step 6 — Hang the door and finish the trim

Fit the door, adjust the reveal until the gap is even, then set the catch to close under light pressure. A door needing a shove means the box is out of plumb. Patch the drywall, run casing over the cut edge, then let the paint cure.

What changes on masonry walls and blocked bays

With no bay available, the cabinet mounts on the wall face rather than inside it, projecting into the room, so re-check door swings.

Common mistakes

Cutting the opening before the cabinet arrives is the expensive one: published openings vary by a fraction of an inch between models, and patched drywall never fully disappears. Setting height off a nearby countertop rather than off the person who irons is the next most common, and harder to undo. Watch for these too:

  • Fixing through drywall alone, with no screw reaching a stud or the cleat.
  • Ignoring board projection, roughly 40-51 in (102-130 cm) on common units, which can land in a doorway.
  • Over-tightening the corner screws until the flange bows and the door reveal runs visibly uneven.
  • Choosing a bay beside a corner, where a doubled stud narrows the cavity below the required width.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a permit to cut a wall opening for an ironing cabinet?

Usually not for a non-load-bearing interior partition, but rules vary by city and building type. Permits are more likely in condos, leased premises, and any job that moves wiring or plumbing. Check with the local building department first, and hire a licensed trade if a service sits in the bay.

Can a recessed ironing board go in an exterior wall?

It can, but the trade-offs are real. The cabinet fills depth that insulation needs, and opening the interior face can breach the air barrier. In cold or humid climates that shows up later as a cold spot or as condensation behind the box.

Should the cabinet go in before or after drywall on a new build?

Before, in most cases. With the framing open you can place the cleat precisely, set the opening height exactly, and drive fasteners into clean studs, then let the drywall crew cut to the flange. A retrofit reverses that and adds taping and paint.

Can you move an existing built-in ironing board to another wall?

Yes. Back out the fasteners, lift the cabinet clear, then patch and refinish the old opening. The new bay must meet the same rough opening and depth, and needs its own cleat. Budget for new casing, since original trim rarely survives removal.
