Rough opening by board length
Board length drives every other number, so start there. The figures below come from a widely sold North American ironing center and describe the hole in the wall, not the box that goes into it.

Other manufacturers publish openings that differ by a fraction of an inch, which is enough to leave a visible gap or a cabinet that will not seat. Work from the drawing supplied with your unit and cut once the box is on site.
Why a 2×4 stud bay is the enabling condition
Depth is the gatekeeper. At 3-7/8 in (9.8 cm), the required opening depth is roughly what a conventional stud wall already offers: nominal 2×4 framing is commonly about 3-1/2 in (8.9 cm) deep, and the drywall layer makes up the difference. That single coincidence is why the recessed format exists.
Width works the same way. Studs at 16 in (40.6 cm) on center leave a clear bay of roughly 14-1/2 in (36.8 cm) between them, so the 14-3/8 in opening is designed to sit inside that bay with the cut edges landing on the stud faces. Nothing here is negotiable by trimming the cabinet, and no stud may be notched to widen a bay. Opening height and the board height it produces
Two heights matter and people often confuse them. The first is how far the bottom of the rough opening sits above the finished floor; the second is where the deployed board finally rests. Manufacturer tables commonly pair opening heights of 13-29 in (33-74 cm) with finished board heights of 29-40 in (74-102 cm), and adjustable models add roughly a 4 in (10 cm) differential on top.
Choose the board height first, then read back to the opening height the table calls for. Most people iron comfortably standing with the surface at 32-36 in (81-91 cm), while seated ironing sits nearer 27-29 in (69-74 cm). Measure the main user rather than copying a neighbor’s install, because the bracket position is fixed once the drywall is patched and the trim is on.
Clearance to leave around the cabinet
The wall opening is only half the specification. A deployed board takes floor area out of the middle of the room, and a cabinet with no room to open goes unused.

Check the projection figure against your floor plan before committing to a wall. A board that lands in a doorway, across a walkway or in front of a laundry appliance is the usual reason a finished install gets ignored.
What to check before you order
Measure the bay itself, not the wall surface. Pull a section of baseboard, drill a probe hole inside the future opening, or use a stud finder to confirm the clear width between studs and the absence of pipes and cables. Then run through the rest:
- A 2×6 wall is fine. The opening stays the same and the extra depth is simply packed out behind the cabinet.
- Solid masonry, concrete, or a bay blocked by services rules out a recess. Choose a surface-mount cabinet instead.
- Framing outside North America may not use 16 in centers, so confirm the clear bay against the 14-3/8 in figure before ordering.
- Order against the published rough opening, never against the door size, which is always larger.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rough opening the same size as the cabinet?
No. The cabinet body is slightly smaller than the opening so it can be shimmed and squared inside the bay, and the flange plus casing covers the gap. That is why suppliers publish the opening rather than the box. Order and cut against the opening figure, and treat door size as a finish detail.
How much clear wall height do you need in total?
Add the opening height above the floor to the rough opening height. A 46 in (117 cm) model with its opening 20 in (51 cm) above the floor needs about 80 in (203 cm) of clear wall, so check for a window head, soffit or sloping ceiling in that band. A 42 in model needs roughly 9 in (23 cm) less.
Does a swivel model need a bigger rough opening?
No, the opening stays the same. What changes is the fastening and the room in front: swivel units carry extra side brackets with their own screws, and the board sweeps its full projection through the rotation. Plan that arc as a floor area, not a straight line, and keep casings and radiators outside it.
Will a North American cabinet fit European or Australian framing?
Only if the bay measures up. Framing centers vary by market and by builder, so measure the clear distance between two studs against the 14-3/8 in (36.5 cm) opening, then check wall depth against 3-7/8 in (9.8 cm). Where either falls short, specify a surface-mount unit or ask for a frame sized to local framing.
What if the studs are closer together than the opening width?
Move to the next bay. Doubled studs are common at corners, beside windows and around doors, and they leave a cavity too narrow for a standard cabinet. Never notch or remove framing without a structural engineer’s sign-off. If no bay in the room qualifies, a surface-mount cabinet hangs on the wall face instead.
