Planning an Ironing Area Inside a Custom Wardrobe

An integrated wardrobe ironing area needs a coordinated room layout as well as a board that fits the cabinet. Plan the user’s approach, garment handling, opening sequence and return to storage before finalizing furniture. Start with the task from beginning to end

Describe where the user takes out clothing, opens the board, works and returns the equipment to storage. Include the doors and drawers opened during that sequence. A plan that considers only the final ironing position can overlook repeated conflicts with the storage the user needs at the same time.

Ask which surrounding items must remain accessible while the board is deployed. These might include hanging space, a basket or another cabinet. Record the intended arrangement on the plan rather than assuming the room will be cleared before every use. The layout should reflect the ordinary task the furniture is being designed to support.

Divide the review into furniture and room interfaces

The cabinet interface concerns clear dimensions, mounting construction and the mechanism’s passage through the opening. The room interface concerns what happens outside that opening. Do not fill this planning table with assumed universal clearances. Use the dimensions of the selected product and the actual project arrangement, with the responsible designers reviewing requirements for the intended users and location.

Choose orientation before freezing the interior

A pull-out board generally brings the working arrangement out through the cabinet front, while a wall-mounted board uses a reviewed fixing location and its own deployment sequence. The relevant question is how the selected model aligns with the available room, not which format appears most concealed in a photograph.

Review working height with the intended arrangement

Record the intended user approach and the working height proposed on the project drawing. Ask whether the chosen model offers any adjustment and what its installation instructions require. Do not assume that mounting every mechanism at the same furniture reference will create an equivalent working surface.

A representative mock-up helps the project team review reach to the board and its controls in context. Include the surrounding cabinet edges and doors, because they affect access. Avoid presenting one preferred height from an unrelated layout as an architectural requirement for every customer.

Coordinate electrical equipment separately

If an electric iron is part of the planned area, identify the equipment and responsible project parties. Ask the qualified team handling electrical design to review its installation and connection requirements. Keep those decisions attached to the actual project rather than adding a generic socket location or cable-routing instruction to a furniture article.

The furniture review should still show where the proposed equipment and connection arrangement interact with movement and storage. Bring any conflict back to the relevant designers. Do not conceal an unresolved electrical interface behind a statement that the board itself fits the cabinet.

Keep storage useful while ironing

A concealed board trades some furniture or wall allocation for a dedicated storage arrangement. Review what remains available when it is deployed. If opening the board blocks all garment storage or a commonly used drawer, decide whether the operating sequence is acceptable before the furniture detail is approved.

Include ordinary garment handling in the mock-up. The user may need to move between the board and hanging storage, so review that route with the board in position. This task-based check can be more informative than assessing the room only when every door is closed and every shelf is empty.

Design access for future service

Ask how the installed board can be adjusted and removed, and which parts must remain accessible. A mechanism installed early in furniture assembly may later be enclosed by trim, shelves or neighboring components. Confirm the service route in the finished arrangement rather than relying only on the original installation sequence.

Record compatible cover and replacement identification alongside the furniture schedule. If the project uses different board variants, make those differences visible. Future maintenance should be able to identify the installed version without reverse-engineering the wardrobe from photographs.

Coordinate approval across disciplines

Prepare one marked plan that connects the product drawing to the wardrobe and room layout. Give unresolved interfaces an owner: product fit, furniture support, user access, electrical design or maintenance access. This is more actionable than asking every party to approve a broad statement that the integrated ironing centre is suitable.

When a designer changes a door, interior shelf or mounting orientation, revisit the relevant operation and access checks. A change that improves storage may affect deployment; a change that clears deployment may alter the service route. Keep the current approved arrangement linked to the purchase specification.
