Built-In vs Wall-Mounted Ironing Board: What’s the Difference?

A built-in ironing board lives inside a cabinet or a wall recess behind a door. A wall-mounted board hangs on a bracket fixed to the wall face and folds flat against it. Built-in units need an opening cut in the wall, commonly 14-3/8 in (36.5 cm) wide between studs. Wall-mounted units need only anchors, and can be unscrewed and patched.

What each name actually means

Built-in describes where the board is stored: inside something. The unit is a cabinet holding the board, the mechanism and often an iron rest, closed by a door or panel. Recess that cabinet into the wall and the door sits nearly flush with the plaster; hang the same cabinet on the surface and it stands proud of it. Either way the board is out of sight when the door shuts.

Wall-mounted describes how the unit is held: by a bracket screwed to the wall. There is no cabinet and no door. The board folds up against the wall and stays visible, held by a latch. That structural difference drives everything else, from the wall work to whether you can take it with you.

The overlap case that causes wrong orders

One product sits in both categories, and it is behind most mis-ordered units: the surface-mount cabinet. It is built-in, because the board lives inside a cabinet with a door. It is wall-mounted, because the whole cabinet is fixed to the face of the wall rather than let into it. Suppliers list it under both headings, so a buyer who searched one term and ordered the other still receives a box.

Ask one question to settle it before you order: does this unit need a cavity in the wall, or does it sit on the wall? A recessed cabinet needs 3-7/8 in (9.8 cm) of clear depth inside the stud bay. How much wall work each format needs

A recessed built-in is construction. The wall must be non-load-bearing and free of pipework and cabling, an opening is cut between two studs, and a 2×4 cross-support cleat is fixed between them at the bottom of the opening before the cabinet drops in. Afterwards the plaster is made good and the door is finished to match the room.

A wall-mounted board is a fixing job. The bracket is set at the chosen height, holes are drilled into a stud, masonry or a plywood backer, and the unit is bolted on. The wall keeps its cavity, insulation and services untouched. That gap in commitment is why renovators lean built-in and everyone else leans wall-mounted, and why the two rarely cost the same to install.

Common mistakes when ordering

Measuring the door instead of the rough opening is the most frequent error, and an expensive one because the cabinet arrives before anyone notices. Order by the rough opening dimensions above, then confirm stud spacing on site.

The next mistake is buying a recessed cabinet for a wall that cannot host one: masonry, an insulated exterior wall, or a bay carrying a waste stack. Check before ordering, not after cutting. Third, do not assume a wall-mounted board can be recessed later; a surface bracket and a cabinet are different products with different hardware. Finally, check projection against door swings: a board reaching 40-51 in (102-130 cm) into a narrow laundry room blocks the doorway in either format.

Frequently asked questions

Does in-wall mean the same thing as built-in?

In-wall is one type of built-in, not a synonym. Built-in covers any board stored inside something with a door, including cabinets hung on the wall surface, drawer units and closet-mounted models. In-wall means the cabinet is recessed into the wall cavity so the door finishes close to flush. Every in-wall board is built-in; not every built-in board is in-wall.

Can a built-in ironing board go in an exterior wall?

Usually not, and it is rarely worth trying. An exterior wall carries insulation and often a vapour barrier, both of which a 3-7/8 in (9.8 cm) deep cabinet would interrupt, and the wall may be load-bearing. Choose an interior partition wall between rooms, or fit a surface-mount cabinet or a wall bracket instead so the wall build-up stays intact.

Can you convert a wall-mounted board into a built-in one later?

Not by conversion. The bracket, board profile and fixing hardware suit a different mounting method, so recessing means buying a cabinet unit and cutting the opening. If a renovation is coming within a few years, either wait and fit a built-in then, or treat the wall-mounted unit as the interim answer and budget separately.

Do built-in ironing boards need an electrical supply?

Most do not. The common formats are mechanical: a board, a hinge and a latch, with no power. Some cabinets add a light, a timer or an outlet, and those versions need an electrician, a circuit and the right electrical listing for the market. Confirm which variant you are ordering, because wiring changes the installation sequence.
